AUSSOM Honors Ghana Formed Police Unit with Medal Parade in SouthWest State of Somalia

Baioda (LM) The African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) recognized the contributions of the Ghana Formed Police Unit (GFPU) by awarding medals to 160 officers during a ceremony in Baidoa, South West State. The event, held on Tuesday, was officiated by AUSSOM Police Commissioner, Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Hillary Sao Kanu.
AIGP Kanu emphasized the significance of the medal parade, stating, “Today’s occasion recognizes the contributions, professionalism, and resilience demonstrated by the Ghana Formed Police Unit Contingent.” She praised Ghana’s commitment to international peacekeeping and highlighted the effective collaboration between the GFPU, AUSSOM troops, the UN, and the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS).
During their deployment, the officers exhibited exemplary discipline and courage in a challenging environment, playing a vital role in securing key installations, providing escorts for humanitarian services, and protecting vulnerable communities. AIGP Kanu acknowledged their efforts in building capacity for the Somali Police Force.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Desmund Boampong, representing the Inspector General of the Ghana Police, commended the contingent for their dedication, noting, “This occasion reflects the sacrifice, unity, and professionalism that define our gallant officers.”
The Ghana FPU Contingent Commander, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Benjamin Dokurugu, expressed gratitude to his officers for effectively executing duties during their year-long tour. He also thanked AUSSOM and the UN for providing various training programs, including those on Human Rights and Women, Peace, and Security (WPS).
CSP Dokurugu highlighted the contingent’s achievements: “We conducted operations, protected and escorted UN staff and humanitarian workers, and mentored the Somali Police Force, all with surgical precision and success.”
The ceremony was attended by dignitaries, including the South West State Minister for Security, Hassan Abdiqadir, along with senior officials from AUSSOM and the UN. AUSSOM Ethiopian Contingent Commander Brig. Gen. Besfat Fente extended his congratulations to the Ghanaian police officers for completing their tour with dignity and discipline.
