TPLF Rejects Abiy Ahmed’s Call for Interim Presidency Candidates, Citing Violations of Pretoria Agreement

Addis-ababa Ethiopia – The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) has firmly rejected Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s recent call for the people of Tigray to “nominate” candidates for an interim presidency. The TPLF characterized the call as a “unilateral decision” that undermines the Pretoria Agreement, which aimed to bring peace to the region following years of conflict.

In a statement released on March 26, the TPLF accused the federal government of “persistently seeking to unilaterally impose new terms on the Comprehensive Agreement for the Resolution of the Conflict (CoHA), engaging in acts of sabotage that undermine peace and progress.” The party expressed concerns that the government is making critical decisions without the necessary joint discussions and understandings among the contracting parties.

Citing Article 10 of the Pretoria Agreement, which stipulates that “the establishment of an inclusive interim regional administration will be settled through political dialogue between the parties,” the TPLF condemned the federal government’s reliance on Proclamation 359/1995 and Regulation 533/2015. They argued that this approach directly contradicts the spirit and content of the CoHA.

“The Interim Government in Tigray is a product of the CoHA, not a unilateral decision by the Ethiopian government. The current hostile actions blatantly violate the agreement,” the statement read.

The TPLF’s rejection of the Prime Minister’s call signals ongoing tensions in the region and raises concerns about the future of peace and stability in Tigray. As both sides navigate this complex political landscape, the need for constructive dialogue and adherence to previously established agreements remains critical for lasting peace.
