Somali Parliamentarians Return from 150th IPU World Parliament Assembly

Mogadishu-(LM) A delegation from both Houses of the Somali Parliament, led by the 2nd Deputy Speaker of the House of the People, Mr. Abdullahi Omar Abshirow, has returned to Somalia after attending the 150th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) World Parliament Assembly in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
The five-day assembly, which concluded recently, covered a range of important agenda items, including proposed amendments to the IPU statutes and initiatives focused on social development and justice. These discussions aimed to enhance parliamentary collaboration and address global challenges.
Senator Samsam Dahir Mahmud, a prominent member of the delegation, made a notable contribution at the Women’s Forum of the World Parliament. She emphasized the critical role of women in political participation, advocating for increased efforts from the IPU Women’s Parliament members. “It is essential to pressure countries with low women’s representation to allocate special seats for women and girls, enabling them to compete effectively in elections at all levels,” Senator Mahmud stated.
The discussions at the assembly highlighted the ongoing commitment of the Somali Parliament to promoting gender equality and empowering women in political spheres. The return of the delegation marks a significant step in Somalia’s engagement with international parliamentary efforts, aiming to foster democratic values and inclusive governance.
