Egypt and Eritrea Issue Critical Statement on Red Sea Security

Cairo ( LM) In a significant diplomatic meeting held in Cairo, Egyptian Foreign Minister Dr. Badr Abdelatty welcomed his Eritrean counterpart, Osman Saleh. The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral relations and addressing regional challenges to promote peace and stability in the Horn of Africa.
A joint press release following the Egyptian-Eritrean Foreign Ministers’ Meeting highlighted several key outcomes:
1. Trilateral Meeting Planned: The two countries agreed to convene a trilateral meeting involving Egypt, Eritrea, and Somalia to further implement previously reached agreements.
2. Regional Security Concerns: The ministers exchanged views on various regional issues, particularly those affecting the African continent. They emphasized the need for collaborative efforts to support peace and security in the Horn of Africa, with a specific focus on aiding Somalia in its fight against terrorism and reinforcing its territorial sovereignty.
3. Red Sea Governance: A significant point of contention discussed was the ongoing developments in the Red Sea. Both ministers expressed their firm opposition to the involvement of non-Red Sea nations in the security and governance of this critical maritime area.
Their statement explicitly targeted Ethiopia, asserting that the management of Red Sea security should be led exclusively by the countries bordering the sea.
This meeting underscores the commitment of Egypt and Eritrea to work collaboratively on matters affecting their national interests and regional stability, particularly in the face of external influences on Red Sea governance.
