Djibouti Troops from AUSSOM and UNMAS Commemorate International Mine Action Day in Beledweyne

Beledweyne-(LM) The troops from the Djibouti-led African Union Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) and the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) marked International Mine Action Day (IMAD) under the theme “A Better Future Starts Here – Ban Discrimination – Take Action.” The event highlighted the ongoing commitment to addressing the threat posed by improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in the Hiran region of Somalia.
Lt. Gen. Said Waberi, Commander of the AUSSOM 4th Division, emphasized the significance of IMAD in tackling the global issue of explosive devices. He expressed gratitude to UNMAS for its continued support in combating this pressing challenge. “Today serves as a reminder of the critical need to work together to create a safer environment for our communities,” he stated.
UNMAS Operations Officer Tariku Girma reaffirmed the agency’s dedication to fostering a mine-free environment, highlighting the importance of collaboration among various stakeholders. “Our mission is to ensure that communities can live free from the fear of landmines and explosive remnants of war,” Girma said.
Benjamin Jonah, Head of the UN Transitional Authority in Somalia (UNTMIS), commended UNMAS for its efforts in building capacity alongside partner agencies to effectively counter the threat of explosive devices. He noted that such collaborations are essential for achieving lasting peace and security in the region.
The observance of International Mine Action Day serves to raise awareness about the dangers of landmines and to promote actions that contribute to safer communities. As efforts continue, the collective commitment of AUSSOM, UNMAS, and local partners remains crucial in ensuring the safety and well-being of the Somali people.
