IGAD Participates in 24th Ministerial Meeting of the Horn of Africa Initiative

Washington (LM) Representing the Executive Secretary, H.E. Dr. Workneh, IGAD Deputy Executive Secretary H.E. Mohamed Abdi Ware participated in the 24th Ministerial Meeting of the Horn of Africa Initiative, held alongside the 2025 World Bank Spring Meetings.
This year’s meeting focused on Trade Facilitation, emphasizing the importance of cross-border trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). This initiative is a key priority for IGAD, particularly in enhancing economic cooperation among the region’s borderlands.
During the meeting, IGAD extended its congratulations to H.E. Bihi Egeh, Minister of Finance of Somalia, on assuming the Chairmanship of the Initiative from H.E. Ahmed Shide, Minister of Finance of Ethiopia. This leadership transition marks a significant step in fostering collaboration and economic integration among Horn of Africa nations.
The discussions highlighted the potential for increased regional trade and investment, aiming to boost economic growth and development through enhanced regional cooperation. IGAD remains committed to supporting member states in achieving these objectives, reinforcing its role as a facilitator of dialogue and partnership in the Horn of Africa.
