Former Somali President Calls for Unity and Support for National Army

Mogadishu (LM): Former President of the Federal Republic of Somalia H.E. Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo has urged the Somali people to remain vigilant against terrorists’ misleading propaganda, which they use to undermine the country’s national army and distort the realities on the ground. In a recent statement, Farmajo emphasized that the strategic withdrawal of the national army from certain cities should not be misconstrued as a defeat.
“The fact that the national army has emerged from cities with great skill and tactics does not mean it has been defeated,” Farmajo asserted in a press release. He called on all Somalis to stand firmly behind their brave soldiers, stating that such unity is essential for achieving victory over terrorist elements.
Reflecting on past successes, Farmajo recalled the period from 2018 to 2020 when the national army, while being strengthened, successfully liberated several cities from terrorist control, including Marka, Jannaalle, Ow-Dheegle, Bariirre, Sabiid, and Canoole. “It is certain that while the army is being built, it is possible to defeat anti-peace groups,” he noted.
Furthermore, the former president urged the current leadership at both the federal and state levels to prioritize the common good. He emphasized the need for political stability, unity, and solidarity, advocating for a consensus-driven approach to constitutional and electoral processes, which he believes are crucial for the completion of state-building efforts in Somalia.
Farmajo also reached out to international partners, highlighting their vital role in Somalia’s recovery and the ongoing fight against terrorism. He encouraged them to continue their support for the Somali government and people as they work towards enhancing the capabilities of the National Army.
This appeal for unity and resilience underscores the challenges facing Somalia as it navigates a complex security landscape while striving for peace and stability.
